Sierra Giorgio, a senior from Vaughan, Ontario, has been named the Sun Belt Defensive Player of the Week. The announcement was made on Tuesday by the Sun Belt Conference.
Giorgio’s performance against James Madison last Friday contributed to her recognition. She recorded five saves in that match and prevented James Madison, which leads the conference in total goals, points, and game-winning goals, from scoring. One of her key moments came in the 81st minute when she saved a shot during a one-on-one situation.
This season, Giorgio leads the Sun Belt Conference in goals against average with .721 and total shutouts with six. She has played an important role in South Alabama’s defensive line, helping the team rank 21st nationally in shutout percentage at .571. South Alabama also leads the conference with a goal differential of 19 and a goals-against average of .786.
Giorgio has accumulated 37 saves and six shutouts for South Alabama this season.
