The U.S. Senate recently voted on the Protection of Women and Girls in Sports Act, introduced by Senator Tommy Tuberville (R-AL). The bill aimed to prevent federally-funded institutions from allowing men to participate in women’s sports and use facilities designated for females. However, it failed to advance due to a lack of the required 60 votes, with all 45 Senate Democrats opposing it.

Senator Tuberville advocated for the legislation as a means to preserve Title IX protections and ensure fair competition for female athletes. “Over the past four years, women’s sports and women’s protections, at all levels, have been under attack,” he stated. He also expressed concern about biological males participating in female sports and highlighted that “at least 900 medals that belonged to women have gone to men just over the past few years.”

The bill had previously passed the House with some bipartisan support but faced challenges in the Senate. Tuberville emphasized that public opinion largely supports his stance, citing polls indicating significant opposition among Americans against biological males competing in women’s sports.

Tuberville’s efforts follow actions by former President Trump, including an Executive Order banning federal funding for states allowing such participation. However, Tuberville stressed the need for permanent legislative action: “Congress needs to act on this to protect women’s sports to ensure Title IX protections are preserved.”

Despite support from Republican colleagues and some Democrats in previous House votes, Senate Democrats remained opposed. This resistance has drawn criticism from Tuberville and others who argue it contradicts public sentiment.

Senator Tuberville continues his advocacy through other legislative initiatives focused on protecting female athletes’ rights under Title IX.
