U.S. Senator Tommy Tuberville, representing Alabama, has joined 51 other Republican senators in urging President Trump to ensure the complete dismantlement of Iran’s nuclear program. The group sent a letter emphasizing the need for a deal that permanently ends Iran’s uranium enrichment capabilities.
Senator Tuberville expressed his support for President Trump’s policy on Iran multiple times. The letter states: “We write to express our strong support for your efforts to secure a deal with Iran that dismantles its nuclear program, and to reinforce the explicit warnings that you and officials in your administration have issued that the regime must permanently give up any capacity for enrichment.”
The senators highlighted concerns about past agreements like the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), which they argue allowed Iran to delay while continuing its nuclear activities. They stated: “We cannot afford another agreement that enables Iran to play for time, as the JCPOA did.”
In addition to Tuberville and Ricketts, other signatories include Senators Jim Banks, John Barrasso, Marsha Blackburn, John Boozman, Katie Britt, Ted Budd, Bill Cassidy, Shelly Moore Capito, Susan Collins, Kevin Cramer, Mike Crapo, John Cornyn, Tom Cotton, Ted Cruz among others.
The letter also criticizes the Biden administration’s approach toward Iran. It claims that recent policies have allowed Iran to advance its nuclear ambitions without reciprocal concessions from Tehran.
The International Atomic Energy Agency’s report on February 26 was cited by the senators as evidence of lost continuity in monitoring Iran’s nuclear activities over recent years.
In closing their message to President Trump: “As always we stand ready to provide you and your administration whatever resources you need to advance American national security interests.”
Senator Tuberville serves on several Senate committees including Armed Services and Veterans’ Affairs.
