U.S. Senators Tommy Tuberville, John Cornyn, and Ben Ray Luján have introduced the Supporting All Healthy Options When Purchasing Produce (SHOPP) Act. This legislation aims to expand access to frozen fruits and vegetables for participants of the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP).
Senator Tuberville emphasized the importance of providing healthy alternatives for SNAP participants. “SNAP participants deserve access to healthy alternatives,” he stated. He noted that expanding access to frozen produce is a step toward “Making America Healthy Again.”
Senator Cornyn echoed these sentiments, highlighting the necessity of nutrient-dense foods for maintaining health. “The SHOPP Act will help meet this need for Texas families and communities across the country by ensuring SNAP participants are able to put well-balanced meals full of fruits and vegetables on their dinner tables,” he said.
Senator Luján expressed pride in reintroducing this bipartisan initiative, which seeks to enhance food security and support healthier communities nationwide. “This legislation helps strengthen food security and supports healthier communities in New Mexico and nationwide, especially in rural and Tribal communities where access to fresh produce can be limited,” he commented.
The effort is supported in the U.S. House of Representatives by Congressmen Mark Alford and Jasmine Crockett.
The bill aims to amend current programs like Gus Schumacher Nutrition Incentive Program (GusNIP), which presently funds only fresh produce but not frozen options. The SHOPP Act would enable local GusNIP providers to offer frozen fruits and vegetables, benefiting those living in rural or urban food deserts.
The introduction of this act coincides with National Nutrition Month and National Frozen Food Month, both of which highlight the significance of adopting healthy eating habits.
