South Alabama’s women’s golf team has been recognized by the Women’s Golf Coaches Association (WGCA) for their academic achievements. Five student-athletes from the team were named to the 2024-25 WGCA All-American Scholar Team, joining a group of 1,499 collegiate golfers across 403 programs.
The honored Jaguars include Katharina Schroll, Anna Behnsen, Cassidy Lambert, Malia Uyeshiro, and Flavia Tamburlini. The selection criteria for this recognition are rigorous: a cumulative GPA of at least 3.50, amateur status with participation in over half of the team’s competitive rounds through the conference championship.
Under head coach Marcelo Huarte’s leadership in his second year, South Alabama achieved significant improvements. The team improved from a previous record of 1-127 to 93-29-1 and moved up in national rankings from 256th to 85th place. They also recorded their lowest scoring average in program history at 293.5 strokes per round.
Schroll received additional accolades as Sun Belt Conference Freshman of the Year and first-team all-league honors, while Mercedes Aldana was named to the second team.
The WGCA is a non-profit organization founded in 1983 that represents over 750 women’s collegiate golf coaches across the United States. It aims to promote college golf for women while maintaining high educational standards and traditions of intercollegiate competition.
