South Alabama linebacker Blayne Myrick has been recognized as the Sun Belt Conference’s Preseason Defensive Player of the Year. This accolade follows his All-Sun Belt Second Team recognition at the end of the 2024 season.
Myrick, a native of Fairhope, Alabama, played in all 13 games for the Jaguars last season. He led the team to seven victories, including a win in the IS4S Salute to Veterans Bowl against Western Michigan. Myrick accumulated 101 tackles throughout the year, with 45 being solo tackles. He is noted as the top returning tackler in the Sun Belt Conference and also contributed by forcing a fumble and intercepting a pass against Texas State, which he returned for a touchdown.
The Jaguars will begin their season on Saturday, August 30, facing Morgan State.
In other preseason awards from the Sun Belt Conference, Braylon Braxton from Southern Miss was named Preseason Offensive Player of the Year, while Clune Van Andel from Arkansas State was selected as Preseason Special Teams Player of the Year.
